How UEFA Nations League works

The UEFA Nations League was launched in 2018 to replace the numerous friendlies that usually occupied the dates between the World Cup and Euros.

Each Nations League competition runs across two years, providing plenty of meaningful competition as teams vie for the trophy, promotion or to avoid relegation.

What’s at stake in Nations League

The entire 55-nation contingent of UEFA countries is split into four “Leagues” (A-D). The teams that made up each League for the inaugural competition in 2018-19 were determined by FIFA World Rankings at the time, with promotion and relegation over the first two editions resulting in movement across divisions.

League A, League B and League C are each split into four groups of four teams. In League A, the four group winners advance to the semifinals (and final) of the competition, while in League B and League C, the group winners are promoted to the next highest tier.

In League A and League B, the last-place teams are automatically relegated, while in League C the four bottom sides participate in a relegation playoff, with the two playoff losers facing the drop to the lowest tier, League D.

League D features seven countries split into two uneven groups (one of four teams and one of three teams). The two League D group winners are promoted to League C, replaced by the relegation playoff losers.

UEFA Nations League winners

Portugal won the initial Nations League in 2019, beating the Netherlands 1- 0 on a thing by Goncalo Guedes.

France won the most recent 2020- 21 edition, defeating Spain 2- 1 in the October, 2021 final on an 80th nanosecond Kylian Mbappe thing.

The UEFA Nations League isn’t to be confused with its family competition in North America, the CONCACAF Nations League. The CONCACAF interpretation of the competition features North American brigades and was created for analogous reasons( to replace friendlies) and with a analogous format( Leagues with creation and deportation). The USA won the initial CONCACAF Nations League.
